Marisela

An artisan with the ALAMANOS dream

Ten miles east of Álamos in the foothills of the Sierra Madre is the small village of Sabinito Sur where many artisans live, including Marisela. She’s spent her life perfecting her skills as a palm basket weaver as well as an embroiderer and seamstress.

Palm weaving is a traditional craft in the Álamos area and is a sustainable material that comes from the Brahea aculeata palm. Beautiful baskets, mats and other utilitarian objects are the main things made from the palm.

By creating a line of curated handmade goods from the Álamos region, ALAMANOS’ intention is to keep traditional crafts creation alive and pass it down to the next generation. By collaborating with people like Marisela, who desire to make a living through their craft and are open to new ideas, we can encourage the perpetuity of the regional heritage.

Marisela is a young wife, mother and artisan who is helping support her family with her artistic skills and she has become part of our ALAMANOS artisan community. There are many other people like Marisela and we are establishing relationships with more artisans who have the same vision.
